UPDATE: I WILL BE PUTTING UP A FF2009 MEGAMIX THIS FRIDAY. YEP, ALL THE SONGS WILL BE MIXED TOGETHER, NO SKIPPING!
That time of year again…
Fifteen songs you should have heard this year, but probably didn’t…
Due to circumstances beyond my control, the songs are not linked this year, but if you wanna hear any of these tunes, let me know and I’ll make sure you do.
15. Pearl Jam – Got Some – I love Vitalogy and this song is definitely a throwback to that era. Punky fun swagger and total ear candy. Best bit: When Ed Ved strains his voice “got some if you neeeeee…”
14. Grizzly Bear – Two Weeks – Okay, they just played this tune on “How I Met Your Mother” and I’m sure it’s gonna start to really blow up. Tinkling piano, gorgeous harmonies, what more could you want? Oh-oh’s? It’s got that too. Best bit: when the first chorus kicks in.
13. Grand Duchy – Ermesinde – It’s fine by me if the Pixies never record another song again so long as Frank Black keeps putting out records as good as this. The wailing guitar in the background and the clutter of dissonance contrast beautifully with the melody of Violets voice. Best bit: the final chours where FB and Violet sing over each other.
12. Timber Timbre – Lay Down In The Tall Grass – “Gothic Blues Folk” is now officially a musical genre. This song should be on the soundtrack to a David Lynch movie, spooky and weird and haunting.
Best bit: Around 4:40 where it sounds like the ghost of Carl Perkins came back to rock your face off.
11. Dinosaur Jr. – Pieces – Mascis, Barlow and Murph are back, and this time it’s personal! I could have picked a few tunes from this album, but this is the first track and the first to make me go “oh yeah, Dinosaur Jr rock!” Best bit: the 2 minute mark where J Masicis sets his fender to “KILL”.
10. Julian Casablancas – River of Brakelights – Okay, this song is just annoying at first and just as you are about to skip to the next one it gets interesting, then it gets good. This song gives me high hopes for Strokes IV – The Revengening. Best bit: The soaring first chorus.
9. Spoon – Got Nuffin – I am so glad Spoon decided to put out an EP between albums. GA^5 was a masterpiece and this song makes me anticipate the next album even more. Best bit: all the damaged guitar bits.
8. Islands – Vapours – “It’s the bassline in your mind, it’s a sexy way to cry” This is the uberpop single Paris Hilton wishes she could’ve had on her album. Best bit: the horns, gotta love the horns
7. Them Crooked Vultures – Scumbag Blues – It’s like someone took Strange Brew by Cream and Trampled Under Foot by Led Zeppelin and put them in a blender set to frappe, what a glorious concoction. Best bit: the drums – listen to Grohl work that bass drum over like Tiger works the ladies.
6. Sunset Rubdown – Idiot Heart – I admit when I heard SR’s new album was called “Dragonslayer” I really wasn’t expecting much goodness. The album is chock full o goodness, however, and this is my favorite track. The lacerating guitars, the build up, the second build up and my favorite lyric of the year “I hope you die…. in a decent pair of shoes.” Best bit: 4:45 where Camilla delivers the aforementioned lyric.
5. Rain Machine – Smiling Black Faces – Kyp Malone is one of my favorite voices in modern music and I was very happy when I heard about this side project. I’m not even gonna pretend that I can empathize with the lyrics of this song, but the gorgeous vocals achieve a melancholy that other singers would kill for. Best bit: around 0:33 where Kyp doubles his vocal.
4. Patients – Mind Ur Manners – What do you do when you are part of 2 great indie bands and have a bunch of songs that won’t fit on an album of either band? Why, put them on a cd under a third band name and barter 100 of the cds off to the first 100 people to e-mail you of course. Luckily for me, but unluckily for Arctic Monkeys (they got bumped from this list at the last moment), someone put one of the copies on the internet. This has become my go to late night driving CD. Best Bit: the breakdown at 1:40
3. The Flaming Lips – I Can Be A Frog – Wayne Coyne is a madma…. er… genius! Who else would come up with such a fun concept for a song and then get his friend Karen O to record animal noises on his answering machine to take the song to the next level? Best bit: Karen’s Gila Monster noise… oh my.
2. Woods – Rain On – I normally don’t like singers who sing in falsetto, but this really works for me for some reason. Maybe it’s because of the lyric. There is an amazing acoustic version of this as well, but I like the wailing guitar in the rock version. Best bit: the guitar solo, damaged and beautiful.
1. Papercuts – Jet Plane – Sometimes a song enters your life at just the right time and captures the feeling of that time perfectly. This is my summer of 2009 song – reminds me of riding my bike in long, lazy slaloms and thinking about someone special and thinking that maybe that someone special is thinking about me as well and just feeling totally alive and in the moment. Best bit: the la-la-las at the end.
