My introduction to Sam Cooke was the scene in Witness when Harrison Ford dances with Kelly McGillis while (What A) Wonderful World plays in the background. That scene inspired me to find out more about Sam Cooke. The man had a voice like butter and had so many great songs, unfortunately he was taken from this world too early. Here are some of my favorite Sam Cooke tunes…..
Sam Cooke – Cupid
Sam Cooke – (What A) Wonderful World
Sam Cooke – Chain Gang

… I shot down Green Day’s last album after just 1 cursory listen, maybe it was because I was sick of (Know Your Enemy) or hated (21 Guns) the songs on the radio. But after hearing this surf rock monster…
Green Day – Peacemaker
I may have to go back and listen again.

Sometimes music stumbles into your life and just smacks you over the head, this happened to me with Betty Davis. The second wife of Miles Davis was belting it out of a radio in a store and I just happened to catch the end of the song where they announced who it was. I was then moved to investigate further. Here is the song that knocked me on my ass…

When I was 15 I had a friend who loved Pink Floyd and one day I was at his house and he was playing something on the stereo a far away voice said “Hey you, get your filthy hands off my desert!” and then a closer voice said “What’d he say?” and then the sound of an incoming missile exploding. Woah! What album was this? My friend told me it was The Final Cut by Pink Floyd and after that day I pretty much forgot about it. Through my teenage years I heard Pink Floyd now and then, mostly the “hits” from Dark Side of the Moon or The Wall. When I was 18 and in detention at school, a guy I know let me borrow his The Wall cassette for my walkman. That album destroyed my brain, it was truly meant to be listened to through headphones, but I never checked out much other Pink Floyd stuff besides Dark Side of the Moon. The other day, I was just walking along when that memory of the 15 year old me hearing the missile explode suddenly came into my head and I had the urge to hear the album in full. There is a lot of debate about the fact that Roger Waters singlehandedly made this album and if it should be considered a Pink Floyd album or just a Roger Waters solo album. I don’t know and I don’t care, what I do know is that I rather like the album, especially the middle part. Here’s a couple of my favorite tracks…
The Hero’s Return – This tune was to be originally included on The Wall, if you listen closely you can hear the recurring Wall guitar motif.
The Gunner’s Dream – I especially love the lyric to this song as you can tell by the title of this post.
I normally don’t do this, but here is the full album for your listening pleasure….
